Operation Tungsten was a Fleet Air Arm strike designed to neutralize the German battleship Tirpitz before she could return to operational status following a repair period. Tirpitz represented a persistent threat to Allied convoy routes and tied down substantial British naval assets as long as she remained combat-capable. By targeting the ship at her Kaafjord anchorage in northern Norway, the Royal Navy sought to remove or reduce that threat without committing surface forces to a direct engagement.
