Battle of Aachen

Overview

The Battle of Aachen was a battle of World War II, fought by American and German forces in and around Aachen, Germany, between 12 September and 21 October 1944. The city had been incorporated into the Siegfried Line, the main defensive network on Germany's western border; the Allies had hoped to capture it quickly and advance into the industrialized Ruhr basin. Although most of Aachen's civilian population was evacuated before the battle began, much of the city was destroyed and both sides suffered heavy losses.

Significance

The Battle of Aachen, fought between 12 September and 21 October 1944, was the first major engagement on German soil during the Allied advance from the west. Aachen had been incorporated into the Siegfried Line, Germany's principal defensive network along its western border, making its capture both a military and symbolic objective. Allied planners anticipated a rapid seizure that would open the path toward the industrialized Ruhr basin, a strategic economic heartland whose capture could materially weaken Germany's war-making capacity. Instead, both sides sustained heavy losses — roughly 7,000 American and 5,000 German casualties — against a German force outnumbered nearly eight to one, underscoring the defensive strength of the Siegfried Line fortifications. Much of the city was destroyed in the fighting. The engagement demonstrated that the Allied advance into the German interior would not proceed quickly, foreshadowing the attritional character of the Western Front campaign through the winter of 1944–1945.
