Overview

Operation Spiderweb was a covert drone attack carried out by the Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) deep inside Russia on 1 June 2025, during the Russo-Ukrainian War. The coordinated strikes targeted the Russian Air Force's Long-Range Aviation assets at five air bases — Belaya, Dyagilevo, Ivanovo Severny, Olenya, and Ukrainka — using drones concealed in and launched from trucks on Russian territory.

Significance

Operation Spiderweb marked a significant Ukrainian deep-strike effort against the Russian Air Force's Long-Range Aviation infrastructure. By simultaneously targeting five air bases — Belaya, Dyagilevo, Ivanovo Severny, Olenya, and Ukrainka — the SBU demonstrated the capacity to project covert offensive action far inside Russian territory during the full-scale war. Long-Range Aviation assets at these bases had been central to Russia's sustained missile and bomber campaign against Ukrainian cities and infrastructure. A coordinated strike across multiple geographically dispersed bases represented an escalation in Ukraine's ability to threaten the platforms enabling those strikes at their source rather than intercepting them in flight.

Tactics

The operation was conducted covertly by the Security Service of Ukraine. Drones were concealed inside trucks and pre-positioned on Russian territory, then launched simultaneously against the five air bases. This approach circumvented conventional air-defense coverage by staging the attack from within Russia rather than across the front line or from Ukrainian airspace.
