Pokrovsk Offensive

Significance

The Pokrovsk offensive was a sustained Russian operation targeting Pokrovsk and Myrnohrad, two strategically significant cities in western Donetsk Oblast. The operation developed as a direct outgrowth of Russia's capture of Avdiivka in February 2024, with Russian forces pushing northwest from that position. The capture of Prohres in July 2024 marked a turning point in the offensive, accelerating Russian advances across numerous settlements east and south of Pokrovsk within Pokrovsk Raion. With Russian forces numbering approximately 40,000 against an estimated 12,000 Ukrainian defenders, the offensive represented a significant commitment of manpower aimed at extending Russian control deeper into Donetsk Oblast and pressuring key Ukrainian logistical and administrative nodes in the region.
