Significance

Operation Solstice, also known as Unternehmen Husarenritt or the Stargard tank battle, was one of the last German armoured offensive operations on the Eastern Front in World War II. Commanded on the German side by Walther Wenck and Felix Steiner, and opposed by Soviet forces under Georgy Zhukov, the operation represented a late-war attempt by Germany to mount armoured offensive action on the Eastern Front at a stage when strategic initiative had long passed to the Soviets.
