Overview

The East Pomeranian strategic offensive operation was an offensive by the Soviet Red Army against the German Wehrmacht on the Eastern Front. It took place in Pomerania and West Prussia from 10 February – 4 April 1945.

Significance

The East Pomeranian Offensive was a Soviet Red Army operation conducted against German Wehrmacht forces in Pomerania and West Prussia between February and April 1945. Commanded by Konstantin Rokossovsky's 2nd Belorussian Front against German forces under Walter Weiß and Dietrich von Saucken, the operation engaged nearly one million Soviet troops and resulted in over 234,000 Soviet casualties, indicating sustained and costly fighting across the region. Coming in the final months of the Eastern Front war, the offensive addressed German positions in Pomerania and West Prussia that represented a potential threat to the northern flank of Soviet forces advancing toward Berlin. Clearing these areas was a prerequisite for securing the strategic axis westward.
