Bratislava-Brno Offensive

Overview

The Bratislava–Brno offensive was an offensive conducted by the Red Army in western Slovak Republic and south Moravia towards the end of World War II. The offensive was held between 25 March and 5 May 1945 using the forces of the 2nd Ukrainian Front to capture the capital of Slovakia, Bratislava, and the capital of Moravia, Brno.

Significance

The Bratislava–Brno offensive was conducted by the 2nd Ukrainian Front across western Slovakia and southern Moravia in the closing weeks of World War II. Its principal objectives were Bratislava, the capital of Slovakia, and Brno, the capital of Moravia—two administratively significant urban centers whose capture extended Soviet and allied control over a broad stretch of Central Europe as German resistance collapsed. The operation ran from late March through early May 1945, placing it among the final large-scale Soviet offensives of the Eastern Front before the German surrender. Soviet casualties recorded at 16,933 indicate sustained combat despite the deteriorating German strategic position. The offensive's commanders on the Soviet side included Malinovsky, Kravchenko, and Shumilov, while German forces under Wöhler, Rendulic, and Schörner were tasked with defending a theater increasingly cut off from reinforcement or coherent higher direction.
