The Kasos massacre was the massacre of Greek civilians during the Greek War of Independence by Ottoman forces after the Greek Christian population rebelled against the Ottoman Empire.

Significance

The massacre at Kasos was carried out by Ottoman Egyptian forces under Ismael Gibraltar and Djiritli Hüseyn Bey following a revolt by the island's Greek Christian population against Ottoman rule. Approximately 2,000 Kasiots were killed. The event occurred within the broader context of the Greek War of Independence, during which Ottoman and Egyptian forces moved to suppress Greek resistance across the Aegean. The destruction of Kasos removed a local center of Greek resistance and demonstrated the scale of force Egypt's fleet and troops were prepared to apply in support of Ottoman authority during the conflict.
