Destruction of Psara

Significance

The destruction of Psara in 1824 marked a severe blow to Greek naval power during the War of Independence. The island had been a significant base of Greek maritime strength, and its elimination by Ottoman forces removed a key operational asset from the Greek cause. The killing of thousands of the island's Greek inhabitants represented one of the war's more devastating episodes of mass violence against the civilian population, reinforcing the high human cost borne by Greek communities resisting Ottoman rule during the 1821–1829 conflict.
