Significance

The Battle of Samos was a naval engagement fought off the Greek island of Samos during the Greek War of Independence. The action resulted in Ottoman casualties of approximately 1,000, indicating a significant Greek naval success in the Aegean. The battle was commanded on the Greek side by Georgios Sachtouris and Konstantinos Kanaris, two of the principal naval commanders of the independence struggle, facing the Ottoman fleet under Koca Hüsrev Mehmed Pasha. Control of the Aegean and the defense of the island communities were persistent operational concerns throughout the war, and engagements off Samos contributed to sustaining Greek positions in the eastern Aegean.
