First Battle of Çatalca

Overview

The First Battle of Çatalca was one of the heaviest battles of the First Balkan War fought between 17 and 18 November [O.S. 4–5 November] 1912. It was initiated as an attempt of the combined Bulgarian First and Third armies, under the overall command of lieutenant general Radko Dimitriev, to defeat the Ottoman Army stationed in Çatalca and break through the last Turkish defensive line before the capital Constantinople. The high casualties however forced the Bulgarians to call off the attack.

Significance

The First Battle of Çatalca was among the heaviest engagements of the First Balkan War. Bulgarian forces under Radko Dimitriev committed two armies—totaling over 176,000 troops—against an Ottoman force of roughly 140,000 holding the Çatalca lines, the last Ottoman defensive position standing between the Bulgarian advance and Constantinople. Despite inflicting casualties estimated between 5,000 and 10,000 on the Ottoman side, Bulgarian losses of over 1,500 proved sufficient to force a halt to the offensive. The failure to break through the Çatalca line meant that Constantinople was not taken, effectively establishing the outer limit of the Bulgarian advance in the European theater and leaving the Ottoman capital intact. The battle thus confirmed that while the Ottomans had been driven from most of their Balkan territories in the preceding weeks, they retained a defensible perimeter around their capital that the Bulgarians could not breach in this phase of the war.
