The Battle of Dermbach was the first clash between Prussian and Bavarian troops in the Austro-Prussian War near Dermbach, Saxe-Weimar-Eisenach in modern-day Thuringia on 4 July 1866.

Significance

The engagement at Dermbach marked the first direct clash between Prussian and Bavarian forces in the Austro-Prussian War, opening the campaign on the Bavarian front in Thuringia. A Prussian force of roughly 5,000 inflicted approximately 5,100 casualties on a Bavarian force three times its size, demonstrating an early and decisive Prussian tactical advantage against one of Austria's principal German allies. The result established Prussian operational momentum in the region at the outset of fighting against the South German states.
