Significance
The Carpathian Front constituted a sustained attritional campaign fought along the Carpathian Mountains on the Eastern Front between the Russian Empire and Austria-Hungary, with German support. The immediate strategic object was control of the mountain passes and the relief of the besieged Austro-Hungarian fortress of Przemyśl. Russian forces had repelled an Austro-Hungarian counteroffensive in December 1914 before the main series of operations began in late January 1915. The campaign produced exceptionally heavy casualties on both sides — over 450,000 on the Russian side and over 520,000 on the Austro-Hungarian side — reflecting the difficulty of large-scale mountain warfare in winter conditions. The scale of Austro-Hungarian losses contributed to the progressive degradation of that army's offensive capacity on the Eastern Front, increasing Austro-Hungary's dependence on German reinforcement and coordination for subsequent operations in the theater.
