Significance
The Battle of Cocos was a single-ship naval action in which HMAS Sydney engaged SMS Emden following a German attack on a communications station at Direction Island. The action was notable for its direct defense of Allied communications infrastructure in the Indian Ocean. German casualties numbered 134. The engagement removed SMS Emden from operations, eliminating a raider that had threatened Allied sea lanes in the region.
