Battle of Galicia

Overview

The Battle of Galicia, also known as the Great Battle of Galicia, was a major battle between Russia and Austria-Hungary during the early stages of World War I in 1914. In the course of the battle, the Austro-Hungarian armies were severely defeated in several encounters and forced out of Galicia, while the Russians captured Lemberg and, for approximately nine months, ruled Eastern Galicia until their defeat at Gorlice and Tarnów. The Battle of Galicia showed weaknesses of the Austro-Hungarian Army during that period and at the same time was one of the formidable victories of the Imperial Russian Army in the war.

Significance

The Battle of Galicia was one of the largest engagements of the war's opening months, pitting roughly one million Russian troops against nearly 950,000 Austro-Hungarian forces. Austria-Hungary suffered between 324,000 and 420,000 casualties—a heavier toll than the Russian losses of 200,000–300,000—and was driven out of Galicia entirely. Russia's capture of Lemberg and its subsequent control of Eastern Galicia for approximately nine months demonstrated serious structural and operational weaknesses in the Austro-Hungarian Army at an early stage of the war. For Russia, the battle stood as one of the Imperial Army's most significant offensive successes of the entire conflict. The defeat forced Austria-Hungary into a degree of dependence on German support it would not shed for the remainder of the war, and the territory lost was only recovered after the Russian defeat at Gorlice and Tarnów. The scale of Austro-Hungarian losses degraded the professional core of that army in ways that affected its performance in subsequent campaigns.
