Battle of Coronel

Significance

The Battle of Coronel delivered the Imperial German Navy a decisive victory over the Royal Navy off the coast of central Chile on 1 November 1914. Vice-Admiral Graf Maximilian von Spee's East Asia Squadron overpowered the British squadron commanded by Rear-Admiral Sir Christopher Cradock, inflicting 1,660 British casualties. The engagement marked one of the Royal Navy's first significant defeats of the war, demonstrating that German surface forces operating in distant waters could pose a serious threat to British naval supremacy beyond home waters. The loss compelled Britain to respond to von Spee's squadron as a direct operational priority in the South Atlantic and Pacific theaters.
