Capture of Gawilghur

Significance

The capture of Gawilghur on 15 December 1803 brought the campaign against Raghoji II Bhonsle, Rajah of Berar, to a close, serving as the culminating act in the defeat of his forces during the Second Anglo-Maratha War. By reducing this fortified position, Wellesley's East India Company forces eliminated the last organized resistance in the Berar theater, removing Bhonsle as an effective military opponent in that phase of the wider conflict against the Maratha confederacy.
