Battle of Deeg

Significance

The Battle of Deeg on 13 November 1804 resulted in a British East India Company victory over a combined Maratha and Hindu Jat force outside Deeg in what is now Rajasthan. The engagement inflicted severe losses on Yashwantrao Holkar's force, with Maratha casualties estimated at over 2,000 from a force of 3,000. The capture of approximately 87 of the enemy's 160 guns represented a significant degradation of Holkar's artillery capacity during the Second Anglo-Maratha War. The British victory came at considerable cost: over 640 British killed or wounded, and the commanding officer Major General John Henry Fraser mortally wounded in the assault. By defeating both Holkar's Marathas and Maharaja Ranjit Singh's Jats in a single engagement, the battle curtailed a coalition that might otherwise have complicated British operations in the region.
