The Battle of Argaon took place on 29 November 1803, between the British under the command of Major-General Arthur Wellesley and the forces of the Bhonsles of Berar and the Scindias of Gwalior.

Significance

The Battle of Argaon, fought on 29 November 1803, pitted a British force of approximately 8,000 troops under Major-General Arthur Wellesley against a combined Maratha force of around 10,000 drawn from the Bhonsles of Berar and the Scindias of Gwalior. The engagement resulted in approximately 1,100 Maratha casualties, inflicted by a numerically smaller British and allied force. Within the Second Anglo-Maratha War, the battle contributed to British pressure on two of the principal Maratha confederacy powers simultaneously, weakening the coordinated resistance that the Bhonsles and Scindias had attempted to mount against British expansion in central and southern India.
