Battle of Zitlala

Significance

The Battle of Zitlala, fought on 4 July 1812 near Zitlala in present-day Guerrero, was a victory for the Mexican rebel forces over royalist troops loyal to the Spanish crown during the War of Mexican Independence. The engagement was part of the broader insurgent campaign in the southern regions of New Spain, where commanders including José María Morelos y Pavón and Hermenegildo Galeana were active in contesting royalist control. A rebel victory in this area contributed to sustaining insurgent momentum in Guerrero at a stage of the independence struggle when control of southern territory was contested between crown and rebel forces.
