Battle of Zitácuaro

Overview

The Battle of Zitácuaro took place during the War of Mexican Independence on 2 January 1812 in the area around Zitácuaro, Michoacán. The battle was fought between the royalist forces loyal to the Spanish crown and the Mexican rebels fighting for independence from the Spanish Empire. The Mexican insurgents were commanded by General Ignacio López Rayón and the Spanish by Félix María Calleja. The battle resulted in a victory for the Spanish Royalists even in the face of overwhelming odds.

Significance

The Battle of Zitácuaro, fought on 2 January 1812 near Zitácuaro, Michoacán, resulted in a royalist victory despite the insurgent force under Ignacio López Rayón outnumbering Félix María Calleja's Spanish troops by a substantial margin. The outcome demonstrated that numerical superiority alone did not translate into battlefield success for the Mexican rebel cause at this stage of the War of Independence. A royalist victory under such odds reinforced Spanish imperial control in Michoacán and dealt a setback to the insurgent leadership operating in the region during a critical period of the conflict.
