Battle of Zieleńce

Overview

The Battle of Zieleńce was a battle in the Polish–Russian War of 1792, in defence of the Polish Constitution of 3 May 1791. The battle took place on 18 June 1792, between the Polish–Lithuanian Commonwealth Army of Józef Poniatowski and an Imperial Russian Army group under the command of General Irakly Morkov, which was a part of General Mikhail Krechetnikov's Russian forces invading the Polish–Lithuanian Commonwealth from the south. The battle ended in Polish victory, as the Russian assault was repulsed, although the Poles soon withdrew from the battlefield.

Significance

Zieleńce was a Polish–Lithuanian victory within the broader Russian invasion mounted to overturn the Constitution of 3 May 1791. Poniatowski's forces repulsed the assault by Morkov's column, inflicting roughly twice the casualties they sustained — approximately 2,000 Russian losses against 1,000 Polish. The engagement demonstrated that the Commonwealth's army could check a component of Krechetnikov's southern invasion force, yet the Poles withdrew from the field after the repulse, limiting the operational gain. The battle thus stands as a tactical success that did not translate into a reversal of the wider campaign to suppress the constitution, illustrating the limits of isolated victories against a larger invading force.
