Battle of Würzburg

Overview

The Battle of Würzburg was fought on 3 September 1796 between an army of the Habsburg monarchy led by Archduke Charles, Duke of Teschen and an army of the First French Republic led by Jean-Baptiste Jourdan. The French attacked the archduke's forces, but they were resisted until the arrival of reinforcements decided the engagement in favor of the Austrians. The French retreated west toward the Rhine River. The action occurred during the War of the First Coalition, part of the French Revolutionary Wars. Würzburg is 95 kilometres (59 mi) southeast of Frankfurt.

Significance

At Würzburg on 3 September 1796, Archduke Charles's Habsburg force repulsed Jourdan's French army of roughly equal size, inflicting approximately twice the casualties the Austrians suffered. The arrival of Austrian reinforcements decided the engagement, compelling Jourdan to retreat westward toward the Rhine. The defeat was a significant reversal for French operations on the right bank during the War of the First Coalition, effectively halting the advance of the Army of the Sambre-et-Meuse and undermining the broader French strategic design of a two-pronged drive into southern Germany in coordination with Moreau's Army of the Rhine and Moselle.
