Significance

The Battle of Werbach was fought on 24 July 1866 as part of the Campaign of the Main, the western theater of the Austro-Prussian War in which Prussia moved against the German states that had sided with Austria. The engagement involved roughly equal forces — approximately 5,000 troops on each side — under Prussian commanders August von Goeben and Ludwig von Weltzien opposing the Baden contingent of the German Federal Army led by Prince Wilhelm of Baden and Oskar von Hardegg. As one of several actions Prussia prosecuted along the Main to neutralize German federal opposition, Werbach formed part of the broader pressure that compelled the southern German states to seek terms before Austria's defeat was consolidated into a final settlement.
