Significance

The Battle of Versinikia, fought in 813 near Adrianople, was a significant Bulgarian victory over the Byzantine Empire in the course of the Byzantine–Bulgarian Wars. Despite fielding an army estimated at 20,000–30,000 men against a Bulgarian force of roughly 6,000–7,000, the Byzantines under Michael I Rangabe suffered an estimated 2,000–3,000 casualties, indicating a severe reverse against a numerically inferior opponent. The battle's proximity to Adrianople, a strategically important city in Thrace, placed Bulgarian forces in a strong position to threaten the European approaches to Constantinople. Krum's success at Versinikia reflected the Bulgarian Empire's capacity to defeat larger Byzantine field armies and project power deep into Byzantine Thrace during this phase of the long conflict between the two powers.
