Battle of Anchialus

Significance

The Battle of Anchialus, fought in 708, was an engagement between Byzantine forces under Emperor Justinian II and Bulgarian forces under Khan Tervel during the prolonged Byzantine–Bulgarian Wars. Beyond its placement within that conflict and the identity of its commanders, the historical record preserves no detail on its outcome, the forces involved, or its consequences for the wider war. The encounter is notable primarily as evidence of continued military confrontation between Byzantium and the First Bulgarian Empire during the early eighth century, a period in which the two powers were establishing the contested boundaries that would define their rivalry for centuries.
