Significance
The Battle of Adrianople in April 1205 brought Kaloyan of Bulgaria's Second Bulgarian Empire into direct confrontation with the newly established Latin Empire, the crusader state installed following the Fourth Crusade's sack of Constantinople in 1204. The Latin force under Baldwin I was vastly outnumbered, fielding approximately 4,000 troops against a Bulgarian army of 40,000. The engagement resulted in a decisive Bulgarian victory and the capture of Baldwin I, removing the first Latin Emperor from power less than a year after the Latin Empire's founding. The defeat severely undermined the Latin Empire's military capacity and political cohesion at the moment of its establishment, demonstrating that the crusader presence in the former Byzantine territories faced immediate and formidable resistance. The battle marked a significant early check on Latin Imperial expansion and strengthened the Second Bulgarian Empire's position as a dominant power in the Balkans during the Byzantine–Bulgarian Wars.
