Significance

The Battle of Valtetsi was an early engagement of the Greek War of Independence, pitting a Greek revolutionary force of approximately 2,300 against an Ottoman army of around 5,000. Ottoman casualties reached 1,149, indicating that the smaller Greek force inflicted substantial losses on a numerically superior opponent. As one of the opening contests of the 1821 uprising, the outcome demonstrated that Greek revolutionary forces under commanders including Theodoros Kolokotronis could challenge and bleed Ottoman formations in the field, lending early credibility to the insurrection in the Peloponnese.
