Battle of Gravia Inn

Significance

The Battle of Gravia Inn demonstrated the potential of small, determined irregular forces to hold off vastly superior Ottoman strength during the early phase of the Greek War of Independence. A Greek contingent of roughly 120 men under Odysseas Androutsos, Yannis Gouras, and Angelis Govios repulsed an Ottoman army of 8,000 to 9,000 troops commanded by Omer Vrioni and Köse Mehmed, inflicting heavy Ottoman losses while sustaining minimal casualties of their own. The engagement showed that Greek revolutionary forces could contest Ottoman advances despite extreme numerical disadvantage, lending momentum to the broader uprising in its opening months.
