Significance
The Battle of Utica, fought in 203 BCE, was a significant Roman victory during the African phase of the Second Punic War. Scipio's forces defeated the combined armies of Carthage under Hasdrubal Gisgo and Numidia under Syphax, inflicting a heavy defeat on both allied contingents. The engagement formed part of Rome's strategic effort to carry the war directly to North Africa and pressure Carthage on its home territory, a campaign that would culminate the following year at the Battle of Zama. By defeating the Carthaginian-Numidian alliance at Utica, Roman forces under Scipio, Gaius Laelius, and Masinissa undermined Carthage's capacity to defend its own hinterland and weakened the coalition holding against the Roman advance.
