Overview

The Battle of Tauberbischofsheim was an engagement of the Austro-Prussian War of 1866, on the 24 July at Tauberbischofsheim in the Grand Duchy of Baden between troops of the German Confederation and the Kingdom of Prussia. It was part of the campaign of the Main and ended with a Prussian victory.

Significance

The Battle of Tauberbischofsheim formed part of the broader Prussian campaign along the Main river in the summer of 1866. Fought between Edwin von Manteuffel's Prussian forces and a Württemberg contingent under Prince Alexander operating as part of the German Confederation, the engagement ended in a Prussian victory. The disparity in casualties — 126 Prussian against 760 Württemberg — reflects the lopsided character of Prussia's Main campaign as a whole, in which Confederation forces proved unable to mount effective resistance. As one of the engagements that consolidated Prussian control in the western theatre of the Austro-Prussian War, Tauberbischofsheim contributed to the broader collapse of Confederation resistance that preceded the armistice and ultimately accelerated the dissolution of the German Confederation itself, clearing the way for Prussian dominance in German affairs.
