Battle of Sphacteria

Overview

The Battle of Sphacteria was a land battle of the Peloponnesian War, fought in 425 BC between Athens and Sparta. Following the Battle of Pylos and subsequent peace negotiations, which failed, a number of Spartans were stranded on the island of Sphacteria. An Athenian force under Cleon and Demosthenes attacked and forced them to surrender.

Significance

The Battle of Sphacteria followed directly from the Battle of Pylos and the collapse of subsequent peace negotiations between Athens and Sparta. A Spartan force had been left stranded on the island of Sphacteria as a consequence of the earlier engagement, and Athens moved to press that advantage. An Athenian force of 3,000 under the joint command of Cleon and Demosthenes attacked the isolated Spartans and compelled their surrender. The capture of Spartan soldiers was a significant outcome within the Peloponnesian War, as Sparta's military reputation rested heavily on the expectation that its citizens would fight to the death rather than yield. The episode demonstrated Athenian willingness to exploit positional gains from naval operations to achieve land results, and it extended the strategic consequences of the Pylos campaign beyond the initial engagement.
