Overview

The Battle of Naupactus was a naval battle in the Peloponnesian War. The battle, which took place a week after the Athenian victory at Rhium, set an Athenian fleet of twenty ships, commanded by Phormio, against a Peloponnesian fleet of seventy-seven ships, commanded by Cnemus.

Significance

The Battle of Naupactus was a naval engagement during the Peloponnesian War, fought one week after the Athenian victory at Rhium. The engagement set an Athenian fleet of twenty ships under Phormion against a Peloponnesian fleet of seventy-seven ships commanded by Knemos, with Brasidas also present in the Peloponnesian command. The severe numerical disparity — nearly four to one in favor of the Peloponnesians — made the engagement a significant test of Athenian naval capability in the western theater of the war around Naupactus.
