Battle of Skuleni

Overview

The Battle of Sculeni was fought on 29 June 1821 in Sculeni, Moldavia between Ottoman forces and the Greek revolutionary forces raised by the Filiki Eteria led by Prince George Katakouzenos. The battle came about as the result of Ottoman reprisals for Alexander Ypsilantis' expedition in the two Danubian Principalities, and followed in the aftermath of the Battle of Drăgășani. When the Ottomans crossed the Bahlui River in Iaşi on 25 June 1821, Lieutenant Catakouzenos and his forces, originally stationed on the Russian frontier, crossed the Prut River.

Significance

The Battle of Skuleni was a late action in the Filiki Eteria's Danubian campaign, fought in Moldavia as Ottoman forces pressed their reprisals following Alexander Ypsilantis' expedition into the two Danubian Principalities. Coming in the aftermath of the Battle of Drăgășani, which had already broken the main revolutionary thrust north of the Danube, Skuleni represented a rearguard stand by the remnants of Greek revolutionary forces under George Kantakouzenos. When Ottoman forces crossed the Bahlui River at Iași, Kantakouzenos and his troops—originally positioned on the Russian frontier—withdrew across the Prut River, effectively ending organized Greek revolutionary activity in Moldavia. The engagement underscored the failure of the Filiki Eteria's northern front to secure Russian support or hold Danubian territory, leaving the Greek independence struggle to continue in the Peloponnese and Aegean rather than through the Principalities.
