Overview

The Battle of Scheveningen was the final naval battle of the First Anglo-Dutch War. It took place on 31 July 1653 between the fleets of the Commonwealth of England and the Dutch Republic. The Dutch fleet suffered heavy losses.

Significance

The Battle of Scheveningen was the final naval engagement of the First Anglo-Dutch War, fought between the fleets of the Commonwealth of England and the Dutch Republic. The Dutch Republic suffered heavier casualties than the English Commonwealth — approximately 2,000 against 1,200 — and the Dutch fleet sustained heavy losses overall. As the concluding battle of the war, the engagement marked the effective end of large-scale naval operations between the two powers in this conflict. Maarten Tromp commanded the Dutch forces against George Monck and Benjamin Blake on the English side.
