Significance

The Battle of Sans Culottes Camp was a Spanish offensive action along the Pyrenean front during the War of the Pyrenees, fought near the France–Spain border in the vicinity of Saint-Jean-de-Luz. A Spanish force of 13,000 under José de Urrutia attacked part of the French Army of the Western Pyrenees. The assault succeeded in seizing two key positions behind the Bidasoa River but failed to carry the main French position, Sans Culottes Camp, after an eight-hour engagement. Spain suffered 335 casualties to France's 235, reflecting the cost of the inconclusive push. The inability to overrun the principal French position left the local balance on the western Pyrenean front effectively unchanged, limiting the operational gain from the day's action to the two captured forward positions.

Tactics

The Spanish army under Urrutia launched an assault against French positions held by part of the Army of the Western Pyrenees. The attack succeeded in seizing two key positions behind the Bidasoa River before stalling against the main French camp. The contest at the principal position, Sans Culottes Camp, lasted eight hours before the Spanish offensive effort was exhausted without breaking through.
