Battle of Boulou

Overview

The Second Battle of Boulou took place during the War of the Pyrenees, part of the French Revolutionary Wars. This battle saw the French Army of the Eastern Pyrenees led by General of Division (GD) Jacques François Dugommier attack the joint Spanish-Portuguese Army of Catalonia under Lieutenant General (LG) Luis Fermín de Carvajal, Conde de la Unión. Dugommier's decisive victory resulted in the French regaining nearly all the land they lost to the Kingdom of Spain in 1793.

Significance

The Second Battle of Boulou was a decisive engagement in the War of the Pyrenees, restoring French control over nearly all territory the Kingdom of Spain had seized in 1793. General of Division Jacques Dugommier led the Army of the Eastern Pyrenees against the joint Spanish-Portuguese Army of Catalonia under the Conde de la Unión, inflicting some 2,000 casualties on a force of roughly equal size. The victory reversed the trajectory of the Pyrenean front, undoing the Spanish gains of the previous year and placing French forces in a position of initiative along the eastern theater of the war.
