Overview

The Battle of Sailor's Creek was fought on April 6, 1865, near Farmville, Virginia, as part of the Appomattox Campaign, near the end of the American Civil War. It was the last major engagement between the Confederate Army of Northern Virginia, commanded by General Robert E. Lee, and the Army of the Potomac, under the overall direction of Union General-in-Chief Lieutenant General Ulysses S. Grant.

Significance

Sailor's Creek was the last major engagement between the Confederate Army of Northern Virginia and the Army of the Potomac during the Appomattox Campaign. Fought near Farmville, Virginia, on April 6, 1865, the battle inflicted catastrophic losses on Confederate forces: roughly 7,700 casualties against Union losses of approximately 1,148. With Confederate commanders Ewell and Gordon unable to prevent the collapse, the engagement effectively shattered what remained of Lee's operational capacity. The scale of the Confederate loss in men and materiel accelerated the Army of Northern Virginia's final disintegration and left Lee with no viable path of escape or consolidation. Three days later, Lee surrendered at Appomattox Court House, making Sailor's Creek the decisive final blow of the Appomattox Campaign and, in practical terms, of the Eastern Theater.
