Significance

The Battle of Five Forks was fought on April 1, 1865, southwest of Petersburg, Virginia, at a road junction in Dinwiddie County. It took place near the end of the Siege of Petersburg, placing it at a critical juncture in the final phase of the American Civil War. The Confederate force under George Pickett, numbering approximately 10,600, suffered roughly 2,950 casualties against a Union force more than twice its size under Philip Sheridan and Gouverneur K. Warren. The engagement unfolded at the close of the prolonged Petersburg siege, situating it among the last major Confederate defensive efforts before the collapse of the Richmond–Petersburg line.
