Battle of Rufiji Delta

Significance

The Battle of the Rufiji Delta was a prolonged naval engagement fought in German East Africa between October 1914 and July 1915, centered on the effort to neutralize SMS Königsberg, a German light cruiser that had taken refuge in the delta. British forces mounted a series of operations to reach and destroy the vessel, which had been effectively blockaded in the waterway. The campaign ultimately succeeded in sinking the Königsberg, removing a German naval threat in the East African theater. The extended duration of the effort — spanning the better part of a year — reflected the operational difficulty of prosecuting naval action in the confined and complex waters of the delta against a defended position.
