Battle of Rovereto

Overview

In the Battle of Rovereto on 4 September 1796 a French army commanded by Napoleon Bonaparte defeated an Austrian corps led by Paul Davidovich during the War of the First Coalition, part of the French Revolutionary Wars. The battle was fought near the town of Rovereto, in the upper Adige River valley in northern Italy.

Significance

The Battle of Rovereto was a French victory over an Austrian corps in the upper Adige River valley during the War of the First Coalition. Fought with equal forces of roughly 20,000 men on each side, the engagement resulted in approximately 3,000 Austrian casualties, degrading Davidovich's corps and securing French control of the Adige corridor in northern Italy. The battle formed part of Napoleon Bonaparte's broader Italian campaign, in which successive French operations sought to neutralize Austrian forces in the region and press toward the relief of the siege of Mantua.
