Battle of Pozo Almonte

Overview

The Battle of Pozo Almonte was an engagement fought during the Chilean Civil War of 1891 between Balmacedist and Congressional forces on 6 March 1891. The Congressional victory eventually led to the junta gaining control of all of northern Chile.

Significance

The Battle of Pozo Almonte was fought between Balmacedist forces under Eulogio Robles Pinochet and the Congressionist Junta under Estanislao del Canto during the Chilean Civil War of 1891. The Congressional victory at Pozo Almonte proved consequential at the operational level: it led directly to the junta consolidating control over all of northern Chile. Command of the north gave the Congressional faction a secure territorial and logistical base from which to sustain and expand its campaign against the Balmaceda government, shifting the strategic balance of the civil war in its favor.
