Overview

The Battle of Concón was fought between the forces of the Congress of Chile and loyalists of President Jose Manuel Balmaceda. In mid-August 1891 the rebel forces were embarked at Iquique, numbering in all about 9,000 men, and sailed for the south. The expedition by sea was admirably managed, and on August 10 the congressist army was disembarked at Quintero, about 20 km. north of Valparaiso, miles out of range of its defensive batteries, and marched to Concón, where the Balmacedists were entrenched.

Significance

The Battle of Concón was a decisive engagement in the Chilean Civil War of 1891, directly threatening the Balmaceda government's control of the strategically vital port of Valparaíso. The Congressist rebel army, numbering around 9,000 men, had been transported by sea from Iquique and landed at Quintero, approximately 20 km north of Valparaíso and beyond range of its defensive batteries. From there they advanced on Concón, where government loyalists under Orozimbo Barbosa had entrenched. The engagement resulted in severe losses for the Balmacedist forces, with approximately 2,200 casualties, severely degrading the government's military capacity in the central zone and opening the path toward Valparaíso and ultimately Santiago. The outcome accelerated the collapse of Balmaceda's government.

Tactics

The Congressist forces under Estanislao del Canto conducted a seaborne landing at Quintero, deliberately chosen to avoid the defensive batteries protecting Valparaíso. From that landing point they marched overland to Concón, where the Balmacedist forces under Orozimbo Barbosa had taken up entrenched positions. The rebels then assaulted those prepared defenses.
