Battle of Pardakoski–Kärnakoski

Overview

The Battle of Partakoski, or the Battle of Partakoski–Kärnäkoski, was fought on 30 April 1790 in the Russo-Swedish War (1788–1790). The engaged Swedish forces were led by Georg Henrik Jägerhorn, as part of a Swedish brigade commanded by Gustaf Mauritz Armfelt. The Russian forces opposing them was under the supreme command of Iosif Igelström, with Victor Amadeus of Anhalt-Bernburg acting as commander in the battle.

Significance

The Battle of Partakoski–Kärnäkoski was fought on 30 April 1790 during the final phase of the Russo-Swedish War of 1788–1790. The Swedish forces, numbering between 3,000 and 4,000 men and led by Georg Henrik Jägerhorn under the brigade command of Gustaf Mauritz Armfelt, engaged a substantially larger Russian force of around 6,000 troops under Iosif Igelström, with Victor Amadeus of Anhalt-Bernburg directing the Russian effort on the ground. Russian casualties are recorded at between 173 and 285, suggesting the Swedish force was able to contest the engagement despite being outnumbered. The battle took place as the war was approaching its conclusion, and actions of this kind in the Finnish theater formed part of the broader pressure that shaped the terms under which both sides moved toward the Treaty of Värälä later that year.
