Significance

The Battle of Reval, fought off the port of Reval on 13 May 1790, resulted in a decisive Imperial Russian Navy victory during the closing phase of the Russo-Swedish War of 1788–1790. The engagement, described as comparable to running the gauntlet, demonstrated the Russian fleet's capacity to repel Swedish naval operations in the eastern Baltic. Swedish casualties stood at 250. The outcome reinforced Russian naval dominance in the theater at a critical juncture of the war, constraining Swedish options as the conflict moved toward its conclusion.
