Battle context

The Battle of Partakoski–Kärnäkoski was fought on 30 April 1790 during the final phase of the Russo-Swedish War of 1788–1790. The Swedish forces, numbering between 3,000 and 4,000 men and led by Georg Henrik Jägerhorn under the brigade command of Gustaf Mauritz Armfelt, engaged a substantially larger Russian force of around 6,000 troops under Iosif Igelström, with Victor Amadeus of Anhalt-Bernburg directing the Russian effort on the ground. Russian casualties are recorded at between 173 and 285, suggesting the Swedish force was able to contest the engagement despite being outnumbered. The battle took place as the war was approaching its conclusion, and actions of this kind in the Finnish theater formed part of the broader pressure that shaped the terms under which both sides moved toward the Treaty of Värälä later that year.
