Battle of Pagallos

Overview

The Battle of Pagallos, or, alternatively Pagayos, was a battle on 8 July 1817 during the Venezuelan War of Independence. In the battle, ships under Antonio Díaz carrying materiel to Simón Bolívar's Patriot army were attacked by eleven Royalist ships in the Orinoco, near the island of Pagallos. Patriots took heavy losses but successfully forced Royalists out of the Orinoco.

Significance

The Battle of Pagallos took place on the Orinoco River during a critical phase of the Venezuelan War of Independence, when Patriot forces were working to consolidate control over the interior waterways. A convoy of ships under Antonio Díaz, carrying materiel to Simón Bolívar's Patriot army, came under attack by eleven Royalist vessels near the island of Pagallos. Despite taking heavy losses, Patriot forces under Díaz and Luis Brión succeeded in forcing the Royalist squadron out of the Orinoco. The engagement secured a vital supply line to Bolívar's army and demonstrated that Patriots could contest and deny Royalist control of the river, a strategic waterway whose dominance was central to the campaign for Venezuela's interior.
