Battle of Carabobo

Overview

The First Battle of Carabobo (1814) was a battle in the Venezuelan War of Independence, in which the forces of the Second Republic, commanded by Simón Bolívar, defeated the Spanish forces under Field marshal Juan Manuel de Cajigal y Martínez.

Significance

The Battle of Carabobo resulted in a decisive victory for Simón Bolívar's independence forces over the Royalist forces led by Spanish Field Marshal Miguel de la Torre. The outcome directly produced Venezuelan independence and the establishment of the Republic of Gran Colombia, making it the effective conclusion of Venezuela's independence struggle. No other single engagement in the Venezuelan War of Independence carried comparable political consequence: the defeat of the Royalist army removed the principal military obstacle to sovereign self-governance and set the institutional framework for the new republic.
