Battle of Numistro

Significance

The Battle of Numistro in 210 BC was the fourth engagement between Hannibal and Marcus Claudius Marcellus, the Roman consul who had previously faced the Carthaginian commander at Nola in 216, 215, and 214 BC. Those three earlier encounters had favored the Roman side, making Numistro a continuation of a sustained personal and operational rivalry within the Second Punic War. No recorded outcome for the battle survives, which limits assessment of its immediate strategic consequence, but the engagement represents the ongoing Roman effort to contain and contest Hannibal's freedom of movement in the Italian peninsula during the middle years of the conflict.
