Battle of Canusium

Overview

The Battle of Canusium also known as the Battle of Asculum was a three-day engagement between the forces of Rome and Carthage. It took place in Apulia during the spring of 209 BC, the tenth year of the Second Punic War. A larger Roman offensive, of which it was a part, aimed to subjugate and to punish cities and tribes that had abandoned the alliance with Rome after the Battle of Cannae, and to narrow the base of the Carthaginian leader, Hannibal, in southern Italy.

Significance

The Battle of Canusium, a three-day engagement fought in Apulia, took place in the tenth year of the Second Punic War as part of a larger Roman offensive aimed at reasserting control over cities and tribes in southern Italy that had defected from the Roman alliance following the disaster at Cannae. As one component of this broader southern Italian campaign under Marcus Claudius Marcellus, Canusium reflected Rome's shift toward attrition and political reclamation after years of catastrophic open-battle defeats, gradually eroding Hannibal's ability to sustain his position in Italy without reinforcement or the defection of further allied communities.
